Gilas Pilipinas’ team in th 2019 Southeast Asian Games is certainly loaded but it’s missing one big name.
Andray Blatche is nowhere to be found in the list of 15 names that will make up the national team in the upcoming biennial event hosted by the Philippines.
Head coach Tim Cone, who will take over for Gilas at least for this SEA Games, says that Blatche’s name was never brought up when thinking about the formation of this current team.
“That wasn’t discussed,” Cone said when asked about Blatche.
“That wasn't offered to me. His name wasn't brought up. I don't know if I'm the one capable of answering that question,” he addded.
In picking his SEA Games team, Cone considered a lot of factors, most especially the amount of time he has to get the national team ready.
In the end, coach Tim chose a balanced all-PBA team led by the core of his Ginebra group.
“It's just about finding the balance in terms of position and trying to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. That's what we were trying to do with this list. We didn't go for all shooters, or all power players, or all slashers,” Cone said.
“We're trying to find a balance in which we could show different lineups so if we wanna play big, we can play big. If we wanna play small, we can play small. We can play across the board. It was really looking for a versatile lineup,” he added.
