SEA Games: Familiarity a priority for Cone in his Gilas team
With Tim Cone taking over, at least for the biennial event hosted by the Philippines, Gilas Pilipinas is going all in with a 15-man team made up of all pros.

Gilas Pilipinas’ 2019 Southeast Asian Games lineup is not the reset the national team needs after a horror campaign in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Instead, it’s the next best thing to a sure gold medal to end the year on a high note following a largely forgettable stint in the World Championships.

With Tim Cone taking over, at least for the biennial event hosted by the Philippines, Gilas Pilipinas is going all in with a 15-man team made up of all pros.

The core of Brgy. Ginebra takes center stage with six Gin Kings making the team.

“Like we did back in 1992. Norman Black brought the San Miguel team and reinforced it with Johnny Abarrientos, Alvin Patrimonio and a few guys. That’s kind of the model we’re working on,” Cone said of this temporary set up.

“And again I don’t have the time to teach everbody. By having a core group that already understands what we already like to do in terms of system, offensively and defensively,” he added.

With Gilas Pilipinas having the pressure to win, this approach, at least for the SEA Games, has been deemed as the best way to go.

Not having younger pro players or amateur guys was also a deliberate move on the part of Cone as there’s simply not much time to go through that kind of process before the SEA Games.

“It’s not really about getting the best players to go. It’s gonna be trying to create the best team that we could get in a short period of time and be the most efficient team that we could put together,” Cone said.

“And I think that comes with the idea of having a core group [Ginebra players] that knows the system and adding to that core and obviously upgrading the talent of that core,” he added.
