Alapag will be part of the staff of head coach Tim Cone for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila later this year.
Gilas Pilipinas legend Jimmy Alapag has made his way back to the national team.
Alapag, who hit the most famous shot in program history, will be part of the staff of head coach Tim Cone for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila later this year.
Cone himself announced the development Saturday night.
“Jimmy’s joining because of his knowledge of the ABL and the players,” Cone said.
Alapag has coached the San Miguel-Alab Pilipinas for two seasons in the ABL, winning one championship.
“He knows these guys really well and he called and asked if he could join and Alfrancis (Chua) approved him,” coach Tim added of Alapag.
Also joining Cone’s SEA Games coaching staff is Jong Uichico.
Coach Jong led the team to the gold medal in the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
“I’ve know Jong for years and years so we’re good buddies, but he’s basically the SBP appointee on the team,” Cone said.
“He knows the international game well. We want to continue to show that this is a collaboration. We’re going to be working with SBP. We don’t make this an SMC thing, we don’t to make it a SMART thing, we want to make it a Gilas thing, a Pilipinas thing,” he added.
The last new member to join Cone’s SEA Games staff is Joe Devance.
While still an active player for Ginebra, Devance is currently injured. He will help facilitate Cone’s system in Gilas while he’s recovering.
“Joe will be part of our staff as well. He’s injured, can’t play, so I asked him, ‘Why don’t you just join us and help us out?’” coach Tim said.
“Because he carries big respect from the players, he knows my system probably better than anybody including my assistant coaches because he’s been with me for 10 or 11 years. He also knows how to impart knowledge,” he added.
