STA. ROSA, Laguna -- Philippine team middle blocker Majoy Baron pictured her next move clearly in her head.
A drop ball to an open corner in front of the net.
Baron drew cheers from the huge crowd and approval from national team skipper Aby Marano as she did a fierce strut following a quick staredown on Vietnam libero Thi Yen Len after scoring on drop ball in the closing moments of the third set.
Baron’s actions were for the highlight reel in the Philippines’ 25-21, 25-23, 25-21, victory against Vietnam Friday in the ASEAN Grand Prix second led at the Sta. Rosa Multi-purpose Gym here.
The Philippines displayed total team effort to repeat over the Vietnamese, who they defeated in five sets in the opening leg in Thailand two weeks ago to bag the bronze medal, but it was Baron who took care of the defense at the net.
“Actually pinaghandaan talaga namin ‘yung Vietnam may mga strategy kaming ginawa, pinanood namin ‘yung mga games namin sa Leg One so mas nakita namin ‘yung mga kailangan i-improve [sa team namin] and ‘yung mga set play nila so mas naging effective ‘yung blocking namin,” said Baron.
The reigning Best Middle Blocker had three kill blocks to finish with nine points.
The Filipinas dominated the net with nine kill blocks frustrating the Vietnamese, who are missing the services of Tran Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. Mylene Paat had two kill blocks while libero Dawn Macandili got 22 digs and 11 excellent receptions for the Nationals’ solid floor defense.
But it was Baron’s third set score off a drop the marked the most in her outing.
Up, 19-17, in the third, Baron outwitted Vietnam’s libero.
The Filipinas continued their celebration afterwards as they completed a sweeping conquest.
