Here's the 30th Southeast Asian Games men's and women's volleyball schedule.
TOKYO -- Only four countries will participate in women’s volleyball of the 30th Southeast Asian Games set to begin next month.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. secretary general Ariel Paredes said that Singapore won’t be fielding a team, narrowing down one of the expected crowd-drawing sport to only host Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and 11-peat champion Thailand battling it out for a podium finish.
“Singapore will not participate and we will now have only four countries participating. So round-robin sila para malaman ang ranking tapos yung 1-2 maglalaban sa gold and 3-4 naman sa bronze,” said Paredes, who is also the event manager for volleyball in the country’s hosting of the biennial meet slated to formally open on November 30.
The four teams had actually played in a sneak peek of the SEA Games in the two legs of the ASEAN Grand Prix where the Filipinas won back-to-back bronze medals.
Volleyball games will fire off on December 2 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Paredes as well as LVPI vice-president and national team program head Peter Cayco and Fr. Vic Calvo on Letran arrived here Saturday to visit and check on the progress of the Philippine national women’s volleyball team in its 12-day training camp.
The Nationals, whose international build up was made possible by LVPI and the Philippine Sports Commission, are looking to end a 14-year SEA Games podium drought since the Filipinas claimed the bronze medal in the 2005 Manila edition of the regionals sports spectacle.
Meanwhile, the PHI men’s team is bracketed with 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games runner-up Indonesia, bronze medalist Vietnam and Cambodia in Pool B.
Seven teams will be fielded in the men’s division with defending champion Thailand, Myanmar and Singapore clumped at Pool A.
Only the top two teams in each bracket will advance in the crossover semifinals to determine which squads will dispute the gold medal.
