The Philippine men's and women's floorball teams deliver contrasting victories in their opening day matches.
Amidst the controversies surrounding the Philippines' hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, the national men’s and women’s floorball teams brought a ray of sunshine Monday.
The Filipinas picked up an 8-1 rout of Indonesia to open their campaign in women’s play at the UP College of Human Kinetics.
Jade Rivera spearheaded the Nationals assault, slotting in five goals in the sport that resembles ice hockey.
“We didn’t expect to win this big. We only prepared as a team for one week,” said Rivera. “But I guess everyone wanted to win as one, just like the motto of the SEA Games.”
Rivera already scored a hat trick in the first period as the Filipinas built a 5-1 separation.
Michelle Lindahl opened the floodgate for the Pinays with the first goal at the 2:45 mark before Rivera’s onslaught. Michelle Cruzado joined the scoring spree while goalies Michelle Simpson and Pia Tolentino displayed good defense with incredible saves, allowing only one goal for the frustrated Indonesians.
The women’s team will face Thailand on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
Not to be outdone, the men’s squad essayed a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Indonesia.
