Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz earned her first gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games stage after breezing through the Women's 55-KG category of the 2019 SEA Games Weightlifting competition, Monday afternoon at the RMSC Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Diaz was heavily favored heading into the event, and delivered as expected, setting the bar in the Snatch portion with a 91-KG finish. She would seal the gold medal finish with a 120-KG Clean and Jerk lift to end with a total of 211-KG.
"Sobrang saya kasi siyempre pinag-handaan ko ito, kaya malaki yung bunga ng pag-hahanda ko," said Diaz.
It was the first gold in four SEA Games events for Diaz, who has won silver and bronze in past iterations of the biennial sports meet. Diaz was glad to have been able to do it in front of her fellow Filipinos.
"Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa mga tao na pumunta sa event ngayong araw na ito, maraming-maraming salamat sa suporta niyo"
The SEA Games gold medal win also bolsters the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist's chances at qualifying for the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Rounding out the podium finishers were Vietnam's Thi Thuy Nguyen who took silver with 197, and Indonesia's Juliana Klarisa who took bronze with 175.
Earlier in the day, a pair of Pinoy weightlifters also came close to podium finishes, with Elien Rose Perez finishing fourth in the Women's 49-KG category, while Dave Lloyd Pacaldo also finished fourth in the Men's 61-KG category.
