The Philippine men' volleyball team starts its campaign in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Monday.
The quest for the elusive podium finish begins for the Philippine men’s volleyball team when it plunges into action on Monday against Cambodia in the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the newly-renovated PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Nationals, who are motivated to end a 28-year medal drought in the biennial meet, face the Cambodians in the Pool B elimination round opener at 6:00 p.m. in the opening day triplebill’s nightcap.
Matches will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, iWant and via livestream.
Head coach Dante Alinsunurin hopes that what his wards learned during their build up including a 16-day training camp in Japan will give them a huge advantage in their bid to advance in the semifinals.
He stresses the importance of controlling the first ball to set up high percentage attacks.
“Ang mangyayari sa amin ay more on focus kami sa service receive namin kasi yun talaga ang nagdi-dictate ng [laro namin],” said Alinsunurin. “Makuha lang namin na mataas ang porsyento sa receive, mas mataas ang porsyento na mananalo kami.”
Bannering the Nationals are a good mix of veterans and rising stars with skipper John Vic De Guzman, powerhitters Marck Espejo, Ranran Abdilla and Bryan Bagunas leading the charge.
Meanwhile, defending champion Thailand takes on Singapore in Pool A action at 1:00 p.m. followed by Pool B action between Vietnam and Indonesia at 3:30 p.m.
