The Philippine Under-22 Men's Football National Team achieved their goal of winning their final two matches in the group stage of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Men's Football Tournament, but unfortunately, it still wasn't enough for them to crack the semifinals.
The U-22 Azkals scored their biggest win of the tournament yet, defeating Timor Leste, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Binan Stadium in Binan, Laguna.
Knowing that they needed to win big, the Pinoy side went to work early, and it was team captain Stephan Schrock, picking up where he left off from the Malaysia win and scoring in the first four minutes of the match.
Long-time Azkals defender Amani Aguinaldo also had himself quite the night of the offensive end as he recorded a hat trick, starting with a goal in the 43rd minute to make it a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Mar Diano and Dylan De Bruycker joined the goal party as well, scoring at the 54th and the 78th marks respectively to make it a 4-0 drubbing.
Knowing that they needed all the goals that they could, the U-22 Azkals didn't let up, and Aguinaldo recorded two more goals in the 86th and 90th minutes.
Things took a heartbreaking turn however, as the Philippines gave up a goal in the dying moments of the match, courtesy of a free kick from Nathaniel Reis.
The blowout win however, just wasn't enough to make up for the goal difference after Cambodia defeated Malaysia, 3-1.
The U-22 Azkals bow out of the SEA Games with 2 wins, one draw, and one loss for 7 points.
Cambodia, who also ends the group stage with 7 points but with the advantage on goal difference, joins top-seeded Myanmar in the semifinals.
