MANILA - Jylyn Nicanor bucked a rough start in the elimination round and went on to capture gold in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Fencing Women's Individual Sabre event, Thursday at the World Trade Center here.
Nicanor went 1-4 in the elimination round poules but rallied in the Table of 16, defeating Thailand's Ngernrungruanroj Pornsawan on points, 15-13, to reach the Quarterfinal round.
There, Nicanor once again picked up a close win, edging out Vietnam's Khanh Linh Phung, 15-14 on points and move on to the semis. Thailand's Tonpan Poekaw did little to challenge Nicanor, who went on to win 15-9 on points to advance into the gold medal match.
In the finale, Nicanor dropped the first bout to Indonesia's Diah Permatasi 5-10, but bounced back in bout 2, 10-6 to secure the first-place finish.
Fellow Filipina Allain Nicole Cortey started strong, but could not get past the quarterfinals, bowing to Singapore's Huimin Ann Lee.
In the Men's Individual Epee, Noelito Jose Jr. settled for bronze after falling to Vietnam's Tien Nhat Nguyen, 15-9 in the semifinals. Fellow Pinoy Lee Eigran Ergina failed to crack the podium after falling in the quarterfinals.
