Fil-German mixed martial artist Mark "Mugen" Streigl captured gold of a different kind as he took the top prize in the Men's 74-KG category of Combat Sambo in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Thursday evening at the AUF Gymnasium in Angeles City, Pampanga.
Striegl blanked Indonesia's Deni Fadhillah, 2-0 in the semifinals before dominating Singapore's Ashvin Jaswant Singh, 8-0, to secure the gold.
An elite-level grappler, Striegl took Singh down at will and controlled the match from start to finish to cruise to the medal-clinching win.
Considered as one of the Philippines' top mixed martial artists, Striegl owns an 18-2 professional record with stints in promotions such as PXC and ONE Championship. The 31-year old is currently the URCC's reigning featherweight champion.
Striegl wasn't the only Pinoy to take gold in Combat Sambo, as Davao's Chino Sy topped the Men's 82-KG division.
Sy, a Southeast Asian Sambo champion and decorated Judoka dominated Thailand's Sonram Jenghor, 9-0 in the semifinals before defeating Singapore's Gary Chow Weng Luen, 4-1, to take gold.
Fellow Pinoy bets Patrick Manicad (82-KG) and Jose Rene Mondejar III (90-KG) both bowed out in the semifinals.
