MANILA - It's going to be an all-Filipino affair in the gold medal match of the Men's Double's event in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Tennis competition after the Pinoy tandems took care of business in their respective semifinals matches, Friday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
The pair of Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales Jr. swept their Vietnamese counterparts Khanh Le Quoc and Hoang Nam Ly, taking both sets 6-1, 6-3.
Huey and Gonzales were dominant in the opening set, but the Vietnamese tandem kept things close in the second set, pulling to within a point, 3-2. The Pinoy duo eventually rallied to take the set and seal the win.
"It was a great performance today, I think Ruben and I played pretty well, so we're excited for tomorrow," said Huey.
Talking about the more competitive second set, Gonzales believes that the Vietnamese team just found their groove. "I think we were just doing the same thing, I think they started playing a little bit better, but we stuck to our gameplan and started executing a little better and then we started to figure it out, so that's was the difference."
In the other semifinal pairing, Francis Casey Alcantara and newly-minted bronze medalist Jeson Patrombon were equally as dominant, defeating the other Vietnamese tandem of Daniel Cao Nguyen and Phuong Nguyen Van in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The two Pinoy tandems play the finals on Saturday, December 7th, and will assure the Philippines of yet another gold medal.
