Pinoys Jeson Patrombon and AJ Lim took gold in the 2019 SEA Games Men's Individual Tennis event
MANILA - Filipino tennisters Jeson Patrombon and AJ Lim both took home bronze medals in the Men's Individual category of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Tennis competition, Friday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex here.
Patrombon, a two-time bronze medalist in the 2015 SEA Games, opened his campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Laos' Sataporn Simmalavong, before picking up an identical 6-1, 6-1 victory over Malaysia's Shamirul Shahril Mohd Adam Das in the Quarterfinals.
The 26-year old Pinoy could not carry his momentum over into the semifinals however, as he bowed out at the hands of Vietnam's Hoang Nam Ly in three sets. Patrombon took the opening set 7-5, but faltered in the final two sets, 6-1, 63.
Twenty-year old Lim followed pretty much the same path, as he opened his campaign with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Patricio Jose Ferreira of Timor Leste before taking out Singapore's Muhammad Shaheed Alam Bin Meqsud Alam in a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 win to advance to the Quarterfinals.
There, Lim was pushed to the limit once again, as he grinded out a three-set victory against Thailand's Kasidit Samrej. Lim took the first set, 7-6, but Samrej bounced back in the second, 7-5. Lim prevailed in the deciding set after his Thai foe succumbed to cramps and was unable to continue.
In the semifinals, Lim was swept by Vietnam's Daniel Cao Nguyen, 3-6, 4-6.
In the all-Vietnamese gold medal match, Ly swept Cao Nguyen, 6-2, 6-4.
