NEW CLARK CITY, TARLAC - EJ Obiena was a class unto himself Saturday inside NCC Athletics Center here, and left no doubt he was the gold standard in 2019 Southeast Asian Games pole vault.

Obiena cleared the 5.45m mark to convincingly claim the gold medal and, at the same time, shatter the 5.35m record set by Thai Porranot Purahong back in 2017.

The 24-year-old even tried to go for his personal-best 5.81m, but just fell short in his last try.
