SEA Games: Team Philippines is overall champion

Boxers got their turn to churn out gold medals as Team Philippines already had the overall championship in the bag in the penultimate competition date of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Monday.

Seven mints out of the possible ten from boxing fell on the purse of the host team, which closed Day 9 of the biennial meet with 137 gold, 102 silver and 106 bronze medals.

Thailand collected 84 gold, 91 silver and 102 bronze medals at second spot followed by Vietnam (79-78-94).

Eumir Marcial ruled the men’s middleweight division, scoring a first-round KO against Manh Cuong Nguyen of Vietnam to capture his third SEA Games gold medal.

Also winning in their men’s weight class were Carlo Paalam (light flyweight), Rogen Ladon (flyweight), Charly Suarez (lightweight) and James Palicte (lightwelterweight).

In the women’s division, Philippine torchbearer Nesthy Petecio outgunned Myanmar’s Nwe Ni Oo en route to a 5-0 Unanimous Decision win in the  featherweight class. Josie Gabuco powered through a flu to defeat Indonesian Endang by Unanimous Decision, 5-0 in the light flyweight final to collect her remarkable 5th SEA Games gold medal.

Athletics bets at the New Clark City continued to deliver gold medals on track with Sarah Dequinah winning the women’s heptathlon while Melvin Calano claiming the men’s javelin throw mint. Kingsley Bautista copped the men’s 110m. hurdles mint.

Sailing accounted for two golds with victories in keelboat match racing in FE28R and keel fleet racing in FE28R. Windsurfing also delivered with Geylord Coveta winning in men’s RS: One and Yancy Kaibigan in men’s RS: X (9.5M).   

Dennis Orcullo reigned supreme in men’s 10-ball while the mixed squash team ruled its event.    

Kurt Barbosa won gold in the men’s taekwondo -54kg., wrestlers Jason Baucas and Noel Norada were victorious in men’s Greco-Roman 72 kg. and 63 kg., respectively, while jiujitsu bet Carlo Angelo Pena won the gold in men’s -56kg. as well as teammates Meggie Ochoa (women’s -45kg) and Dean Michael Roxas (men’s -85kg.). Karetedo’s Jamie Lim (women’s +61kg. kumite) and Jerry Olsim of kickboxing (men’s -69kg kick light) also contributed mints.

The PHI’s mixed team compound duo of Rachelle Dela Cruz and Paul Dela Cruz chipped in gold in archery while Sibol was last to add a mint for the day with its Dota 2 conquest in E-Sports.
