"The Filipino Flash" heads to Cebu for his title defense against Hungary's Zsolt Bedak.
ALA Boxing Promotions president Michael Aldeguer announced Thursday afternoon that Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s upcoming title defense against Hungarian Zsolt Bedak won’t be taking place at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, as originally planned.
Instead, Donaire will be defending his WBO Super Bantamweight title in the so-called “Boxing Mecca of the Philippines”, Cebu City.
“We’ve talked Top Rank, we’re gonna do the co-promotion together with ABS-CBN, and we’ve agreed on putting the fight card in Cebu, on April 23,” Aldeguer announced during the Pinoy Pride 35 press conference.
Aldeguer also said that Bob Arum would be in attendance for the title bout. “Bob Arum has confirmed his attendance, he’s going to be here, this will be his first time in Cebu. We wanna give the Cebuano reception for Bob, and this is something we should all be proud of.”
“This is the start of something big.”
Donaire, who last fought in the Philippines in March of 2015 against Brazil’s William Prado, trains in the ALA Gym in Cebu City, will be fighting in front of the Cebuano crowd for the first time.
The bout is expected to take place at the Cebu City Sports Complex, which has an audience capacity of 10,000 people.
