Deadly combo -- Brazilian Rupia Inck and Bea Tan of Ateneo de Manila were crowned as queens of the Beach Volleyball Republic Christmas Open tournament.
The weather calmed down Sunday as the sun smiled upon Metro Manila after a day of whipping downpour.
But the tandem of Bea Tan and Brazilian Rupia Inck continued their rampage up to the very end to crown themselves as champions of the Beach Volleyball Republic Christmas Open at the Sands SM by the Bay.
The pair buried the duo of Filipino-American Alexa Micek and Charo Soriano in a come-from-behind, 17-21, 24-22, 15-12 win in the finals to claim the title and the lion's share of the P100,000 total cash prize just as a soft shower of rain started to pour as a fitting backdrop to the successful encore of the beach volleyball season.
"It just so good. This is just so crazy. This is just my first beach volleyball tournament ever. I always play for fun and I always dreamed of being a beach volleyball player," said Inck, who is scheduled to fly back in Brazil late Sunday. “It feels really, really good.”
Inck, who played for Philippine Superliga Grand Prix runner up Petron, and Tan raced to a 6-1 lead in the deciding frame to take control. Soriano went down with a left leg cramp while trailing 3-9.
Even with a limp, Soriano and Micek fought back to close in on Inck and Tan, 12-14 before the Brazilian import finished off the match with a hit from the middle.
Soriano broke the deadlock at 19 in the second set with a cross before Inck extended the frame with a perfectly placed shot. Micek took the lead back with a kill before Inck responded with an equalizer.
Micek overcooked her attack but made amends to take back her error with a down the line spike. Inck scored and the next play and Tan forced the decider with a tap that Micek failed to control.
In the bronze medal match, Bang Pineda and Janine Marciano asserted their mastery over Maica Morada and April Hingpit, 21-15, 21—8 for the consolation of P15,000.
Micek and Soriano, the top seed tandem from Group A, clinched the first championship berth after a quick disposal of Maica Morada and April Hingpit, 23-21, 21-15.
The duo who represented the Philippines in the inaugural PSC Spike for Peace international indoor beach volleyball tournament held at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City early this month landed at the top of the Group A eliminations in a three-game romp after suffering a first-game setback at the hands of Inck and Tan, 18-21, 18-21.
Inck and Tan advanced in the finals after ending the winning streak of Group B no. 1 seed pair of Pineda and Marciano, 21-11, 21-17, in the Final Four.
Soriano and Micek tied the pair of Inck and Tan with 3-1 win-loss card after winning their last elims game against Mariel Sinamban and Julie Anne Tiangco, 21-7, 21-11, early Sunday. The duo held a superior point for the tiebreak against Inck and Tan.
Pineda and Marciano swept the 4-game elims capped by a 21-13, 21-15, demolition of Hingpit and Morada.
