Volleyball fans get a taste of the beach as the Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) and ABS-CBN Sports formally announced their partnership with a contract signing and press conference at the ELJ Communications Center Tuesday.

The BVR, led by volleyball stars Charo Soriano, Bea Tan, Dzi Gervacio, Fille Cayetano and Gretchen Ho, will be partnering with ABS-CBN Sports + Action for the coverage of their Open tournaments starting with the Boracay leg next month.

Following the Boracay leg, which is the sixth leg of a nationwide tour that included stops in La Union and Negros Occidental, there will be a seventh leg before the BVR returns to Metro Manila for a "national championship" style of tournament at the SM Mall of Asia beach grounds.

"We believe that sports should continue to be promoted, especially among our youth and we felt that this is the reason why we sort of saw the Beach Volleyball Republic content as a diamond in the rough," Dino Laurena, head of ABS-CBN Integrated Sports said.

"We saw the kind of things that will help promote youth development to the countryside because I see no other content that can actually bring any sport for that matter, really close to grassroots in the Philippines. And this [BVR] is definitely one activity that will do that," he added.

Former Ateneo Lady Eagle Charo Soriano added that it is important to take advantage of our country's abundance of beaches in promoting the sport at a "sandroots" level, considering that many players in the UAAP today are actually converted beach volleyball players.

"We actually live in an archipelago, we actually talked about this as a group, 'why is it more innate for us to have a mainland indoor volleyball as the number one women's sport in the country as opposed to beach volleyball when in fact we have more coastlines?' so that's what we want to be able to do now is to provide the kids an avenue and to be able to train them better," Soriano said.

Even before the Boracay leg, highlights of previous BVR tournaments in La Union, Cagayan and Negros Occidentall will be shown and ABS-CBN Sports + Action and Sports + Action HD.

The semifinals and the finals of the Boracay tournament will also be broadcasted on April 28.

Aside from the BVR stakeholders, local players will also see action in the Boracay leg while NCAA women's beach volleyball champions Gretchel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa of San Sebastian have also confirmed to play.
