With the hopes of strengthening and promoting grassroots mixed martial arts in the country, three industry giants have partnered together to give a handful of amatuer warriors a shot at glory.
For years, the Academy Fighting Championship (AFC) has been considered as the proving ground for young, up-and-coming amatuer fighters to show just what they’re made of.
It was in 2013 that the AFC and the Universal Reality Combat Championships (URCC) joined forces to help MMA in the Philippines grow. Since then, 40% of the AFC’s roster has been called up to the URCC and are doing well for themselves in the biggest MMA promotion in Southeast Asia.
Now, another avenue for amateur fighters has been opened, as the URCC, AFC and media giant ABS-CBN partner together for the revolutionary Fight Farm series, the first of it’s kind in the Philippines, and probably even in Asia.
“We’re putting our full support in MMA. I think we’ve seen that it’s the fastest growing sport currently in the Philippines,” said ABS-CBN Sports+Action channel head Vince Rodriguez. “It’s part of our advocacy that in order for the sport to grow, we need to be able to show stories of people who compete, stories of everyday people, showing that anyone can be an MMA fighter with hard work, with dedication, with discipline. That’s something we want to support.”
“In the show, we want to see the values of an MMA fighter, the hard work, we wanna see the stories of everyone, because in sharing those stories, we also learn from it.” Rodriguez added.
Kicking off in mid-August, Fight Farm will feature 16 of the country’s best amateur flyweight (125-pounds) fighters as they put in the work and fight for a chance at becoming the first ever Fight Farm champion, as well as an opportunity to compete in the URCC.
Aside from the fights, the first ever documentary/reality-tv series will follow the lives of these 16 combatants as they chase success and glory.
“Tayo mismo yung pupunta sa bahay nila, tayo mismo yung pupunta sa gym nila, sa training center nila to cover their life story, to cover the real life, kung anong nang-yayari sa bawat fighter natin, kung ano yung hardship na pinag-dadaanan nila, yung training nila, i-cocover natin lahat yun.” said AFC founder and URCC matchmaker Ron Catunao.
The series will run for 12 episodes, and the Fight Farm tournament will feature a knockout format, culminating in the finals sometime in October.
