Sports + comic book mash-up in ‘1 of 1 – Origins’
"I realized I am gifted, I do have talent, but my focus (and) my mentality is wrong... A lot of being a super-athlete is physical, but even more so mental. The drive, the focus, being able to step out there and say 'I'm not gonna lose no matter what. I will be victorious, I will be!'"

“Every hero has an origin, every athlete has a moment when they realize what they can do when they reckon with the future. These are our heroes, and these are their origins.”

This is how every 1 of 1 – Origins episode begins. A la Stan Lee narrating the birth of yet another superhero. Then again, this new short-film series is a collaboration between ESPN Films and comic book-based media empire Marvel. And this one’s just the first of eight 1 of 1 – Origins episodes, and it features American football hotshot Colin Kaepernick.

In the film, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback recollects his sports journey. You know it as he narrates it himself facing the camera, replete with impact-building musical score in the background. There are old videos of his sporty youth (he played baseball and then American football), and comic book renderings of him, his varsity days, his emotional roller coasters with an epiphany that he should stop acting like a brat, and all that stuff that pretty much make him seem like the next tattooed superhero. Say, X-Men’s Ink.

In four minutes, the film wraps up. It's kinda awesome. Take a look at it youself...

He's an NFL star, but it was on the baseball diamond that his life would be forever changed. The first of our "1 of 1 Origins" series with Marvel looks at San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
