Mid-week recap: Clarkson, Pacman’s next foe, #UAAPSeason78

With the UAAP nearing, most of your editors here at ABS-CBN Sports are losing their heads—but not as much as the whether-Marc Pingris-will-play-for-Gilas-or-not drama earlier. What are some of the things exciting us lately? Read on.

Are you thrilled about Jordan Clarkson being included in the Gilas FIBA Asia Championship pool? Why or why not?

Norman Lee Benjamin Riego/NLBR (basketball editor): No doubt! Jordan Clarkson and Jayson Castro in the same backcourt? C’mon! Here's to hoping that passport of his gets through.

Santino Honasan/SH (sub-section editor): Yes, but not just Clarkson, also thrilled about seeing Ray-Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena's names on the list. An NBA All-Rookie team member and two former UAAP MVPs? Those guys could be the future of Philippine basketball.

Paul Lintag/PL (desk writer): Of course, first because he is a Los Angeles Laker and second, if he commits for the long term, the Philippines will be Asian contenders for the next 10 years or so. Let us just hope he does have the necessary requirements because it seems like he really does want to play.

Barry Viloria/BV (lifestyle editor): I’m all for Filipino athletes making the country proud wherever they are. Clarkson seems very willing to take on that opportunity to raise the Filipino spirit in the upcoming FIBA tournament!

Milan Ordoñez/MO (combat sports editor): Not really thrilled about the "naturalization" of foreigners to play for the national team. They should be focusing more on developing homegrown talents.

Arum wants Khan. Roach wants Garcia. If you are to pick Pacquiao's next opponent, who will it be and why?

MO: Definitely, Danny Garcia. He's a world champion, he's undefeated, and a bigger name that could make for a more exciting fight. Khan would be eaten alive by Manny.

SH: Pacquiao should face retirement, honestly. The man has nothing left to prove in the sport, and he doesn't need the money either. With that being said, I think Pacman should go out with a bang and make both Bob Arum and Freddie Roach happy by taking on Amir Khan and Danny Garcia in a triple-threat boxing match! Right? No? Okay.

PL: I'd take either one but I guess Amir Khan is the most likely opponent for Manny Pacquiao and it may serve as a possible eliminator for a Mayweather fight. Plus Pacquiao-Khan is the more lucrative bout in my eyes, no wonder Bob Arum wants it.

NLBR: Maybe Pacman should just call it a career instead of settling for opponents who aren't in his class. #OneForPacmanII

What are you excited about in the upcoming UAAP season themed "Tumitindig, Sumusulong?"

PL: With the theme "Tumitindig. Sumusulong," I expect a competitive season with more parity. It seems like every team has something to prove this year and it should make for some great basketball.

SH: Well, it's UP, so it's bound to be creative. I'm pretty much curious as to how the opening ceremonies play out!

BV: I heard the opening ceremony will be very Filipino! I wish I could reveal more, but We. Shall. Wait. More than that, I hope the underdog host school steps up more and pulls an NU Season 77 conquest! Aasa ako!

NLBR: I can't wait to see how exactly the Fighting Maroons will "tindig" and then "sulong," be it in basketball, volleyball, cheerdance, football, and all the other competitions.
