You may be one of those gushing over the close friendship between Ateneo athletes Kiefer Ravena and Alyssa Valdez. No surprise there. Superstars as they are both in the collegiate and national levels, they make a perfect sports pair. It’s easy to pass off the friendship between these two Eagles, though, as just for show. But, believe them when they say no.
“Ever since naman when we entered college, we’ve been close na,” Kiefer explains.
“So, kapag sa school or campus, mag-te-text ako or sya, ‘Gusto mo bang mag-lunch or magkuwentuhan?’ More on ganun ang relationship namin throughout our five years sa college, so best friends talaga kami. Kapag may problema, usap-usap.”
Their friendship that has spanned for years now fits right in for both champion student athletes (each a two-time UAAP MVP and back-to-back champ). Their bond makes each other his/her support system, knowing how physically and mentally draining their athletic field is. And this is more so as they approach their last playing year in the UAAP.
“I think as student athletes, we are encountering the same challenges. That’s why we are there for each other kaya naging better friends,” says Alyssa.
Their friendship has soared, piquing interest among fans. Hence, them being dubbed together as KiefLy (Kief + Aly) and #TeamThirty (their jersey’s numbers multiplied), plus the fan accounts and Wattpad fanfics featuring them online. And then there’s their first magazine cover together in Chalk’s November Issue.
If at all, Kiefer and Alyssa are doing it all for the fans.
“Nakakatuwa and flattered kasi grabeng effort ang ginagawa nila for the two of us. Of course, she has her very loyal fans and also my other fans as well, and then through the two of us, nagiging magkaibigan sila tapos nag-uusap usap sila. Doon kami natutuwa kasi nakakatulong kami sa ibang tao na they meet other friends, they meet good company, and they have fun watching our games, so doon kami pinakanatutuwa. At least, may natutulong kami sa kanila, ‘di ba?”
“They find a new set of friends and family, kumbaga,” Alyssa seconds. “That’s what we want for everyone naman, ‘di ba? Parang may common ground, may common denominator, and we’re really happy na I think we’re not doing anything naman ni Kiefer, still sinusuportahan nila kami.”
What’s the biggest deal have the fans done in support of them two?
“Time,” sums up Alyssa.
Kiefer notes, “‘Yun, siguro ‘yun na ‘yun, ang pinaka na-appreciate namin. Talagang sobrang appreciative kami doon sa time na binibigay nila kasi minsan weekdays, kahit weekends—time for their family, time for themselves dapat nila yun pero nanunood pa rin sila ng games namin. Minsan, sumasama sila sa amin, picture-picture, ganyan ganyan. ‘Yun siguro ang biggest. I think she would agree to that. Kahit manalo, matalo, nandoon sila para sa amin. “
Material wise, for Alyssa, “They are so thoughtful giving little things that we really love. Ako, I really love flowers, and they would give me flowers after every game. They are making us feel special even if we are not doing anything in return, we’re just gonna say ‘Thank you!’, ‘di ba? We are really thankful for them talaga!”
