Okay, we’re not trying to objectify ladies here or whatever sexist act you think of us are doing. (We are aware that the following sports heroines are also just students.) We’re just really thrilled to welcome the new season of women’s volleyball, and we’re just trying to release some fanboy-dom here with a guessing game on our favorite student-athletes.
So, yes, in anticipation of the incoming tournament, we’ve come up with a quiz to measure how much of a fan are you of these volleybelles—looking at them, strong is indeed the new sexy!
Let the game begin! We’ve got hints to help you out!
Clue: Slender but seemingly imposing. Very characteristic of a skipper. Her sulky pout is sending some vibes of a grand return.
Answer: DLSU’s Ara Galang. Yep, Season 74 Rookie of the Year and Season 75 MVP Galang is definitely back with a vengeance this year, after suffering injuries that sidelined her at the finals series last season. It’s her last year with the green team, so Season 78 will certainly prove to be an unforgettable campaign for the soon-to-be-alumna!
Clue: Tall, toned with almost-translucent skin that shows her glow. If you get to know her more, you’ll know that her beauty also runs within. This gal definitely has got the star athlete look going.
Answer: DLSU’s Mika Reyes. Also on her last year with La Salle, Yeye—who endorses multiple brands and is a staple in sports and fashion magazines—is keen on giving her all this season. As a veteran, she acts as the motivator on the team in and outside the court!
Clue: Intimidatingly towering. Take that. A glower that says she rules the court. The ruddiness in her skin tone reveals her experience also in beach volleyball.
Answer: NU’s Jaja Santiago. When her older sister Dindin left the Lady Bulldogs, Santiago learned to step up her game. She definitely did, establishing NU in the big leagues; she was awareded Finals MVP at the Shakey's V-League Open Conference, and powered her team to the championships at the tournament’s Collegiate edition.
Clue: Petite. Bony—like, supermodel-kind of bony. Although, it’s her muscles found in the right places that display her athleticism.
Answer: UST’s Jessey de Leon. The architecture student complements her lean figure with her pretty face, which has landed her modeling gigs here and there. On the court, however, she is a feisty Tigress waiting to pounce!
Clue: Sexy, sylphlike, and having strong features easily associated to an athlete's. Her tindig shows no-nonsense sports roots.
Answer: UP’s Nicole Tiamzon. Looking at her fit body isn’t enough for you to know how much of an athlete this Lady Maroon is. The team’s former captain looks up to her former athlete of a mom as her inspiration, and exemplifies dedication and hard work as she goes home to Rizal after her daily training. In fact, after college, she hopes to work in sports marketing or training kids in the sport.
Clue: Magazine-perfect features, check. Assuring stance, check. Her striking height shows how much potential she carries.
Answer: Ateneo’s Bea de Leon. She was part of Ateneo’s team that secured them a second championship in a row last year, and it seems that with the looming exit of veterans Alyssa Valdez and Amy Ahomiro from the team, this sophomore is one to banner the blue flag this season and beyond.
Clue: Incredibly in shape, betraying her athletic roots and champion game play. Her tan and overall vibe, showing how much of a sportswoman she is.
Answer: Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez. You wouldn’t have guessed. Currently the face of Philippine women’s volleyball, the Phenom is taking on her last playing year with the Lady Eagles. She has outgrown her excellence back when she was playing for UST at the juniors event, and has since soared great heights as evidenced by her back-to-back UAAP titles, MVP and other awards in both collegiate and commercial leagues, and a medal in the SEA Games.
Clue: A brawny physique that showcases her arresting persona. Her flawless skin highlights the makings of a sports celebrity.
Answer: FEU’s Jerrili Malabanan. This volleybelle from California is out to carve a career in the Philippines, and she seems to be doing it with a remarkable debut with the Tamaraws last year. With her talent and looks, there seem to be no questions about how far she’ll go.
