Sacrifice isn’t new a word among student-athletes; in fact, it’s a term synonymous to being their kind. As scholars, school and sports are difficult enough to juggle; if they try harder, they can squeeze in two other S’s to their lifestyle: sleep and social life.

This season will be the first time the UAAP senior’s volleyball event gets interrupted because of Lent. With a tough season ongoing, we asked some of the hottest volleyball players in the league what they’re willing to sacrifice in this time of solitude!

Jerrilli Malabanan, FEU Lady Tamaraws

“This Holy Week, I'm sacrificing my time for other things. We on the team are sacrificing our time, so that we can focus on volleyball, stay at home, be with our families, and make time to pray and be thankful.” (Photo by Charice Malico and Raymond Celestino for UAAP Magazine)

Jaja Santiago, NU lady Bulldogs

“For me, yung time ko with my family. (Photo by Paul del Rosario for Chalk Magazine)

Mylene Paat, Adamson Lady Falcons

“Yung pagkain ng madami—kasi dito mo parin makikita yung kundisyon at disiplina ng mga athlete tulad ko.”

Alfred Valbuena, UP Fighting Maroons

“I’m not going to buy any milk tea or milkshake this Holy Week. Ha ha! Kasi I usually buy one every other day. But now I’m nursing my sore throat.”

Rex Intal, Ateneo Blue Spikers

“I will sacrifice going to spontaneous out-of-town vacations with my friends. The past few Holy Weeks kasi, aside from being active in church, I’ve been going out with my friends to unwind. But this year's holy week will be different because the season is still ongoing, so dapat di mawala sa kundisyon and focus.”

Shaya Adorador, UE Lady Warriors

“My family and I are always involved in church activities, like visiting some churches and praying together. Syempre po, this Holy Week, andun pa din yung sacrifice to work out more kahit sa bahay and reviewing ng games namin. Para sa upcoming games naka-ready ako, wala namang imposible para makahabol pa sa panalo.”

Kim Fajardo, DLSU Lady Spikers

“I will sacrifice my time for myself to make more time para sa team. Gusto ko yung i-spend nang maayos yung last playing year with my team and maka-experience pako ng bago with them since madami sa min ang graduating.” (Photo by Vyn Radovan)

Kathy Bersola, UP Lady Maroons

“Time with my family, so I can train more. It’s my first time na di ako uuwi sa Bicol. First time kong gagawin to—every year since ipinanganak ako, umuuwi ako pag Christmas and Holy Week. Pero ino-offer ko tong week for the game.” (Photo by Vyn Radovan)
