Their friendship started long before their collegiate volleyball careers even flickered, having come from and played for the same high school. However, it was in their sophomore year at St. Scholastica College, Mika Reyes and Jessey de Leon remember oh so well, when they really hit it off.
“Naging mag-teammates kami pero hindi pa rin talaga kami naging close agad nun. Magkaiba kami ng set of friends,” recounts de Leon, who went to the University of Santo Tomas.
“Basta, nag-start yung recess at lunch time na lagi kami nagkikita. Hindi kami classmates, sumasama lang ako lagi sa kanila tapos andun sya. Lagi siyang nandoon. Tapos yun, dun na, nakakisama ako sa kanila tapos yun na, nagka team mates kami sa volleyball.”
The similarities turned apparent in their being both outgoing and boyish, and, of course, in their agreed love for volleyball. They would stroll, watch a movie, and shop together, de Leon narrates, “kahit wala kaming pera—window shopping lang. May malapit kasi na mall sa school namin.”
While Reyes and de Leon both love mingling (a commonality that has even brought them to places usually done spontaneously, like the most memorable trip they could recall, a road trip to Tagaytay with some “friends and special friends”), they each share different traits. Reyes comes off as the louder one, and de Leon as the more shy, but this only made them fit each other like a glove. It’s one factor that only made their friendship stronger even after high school, separating ways came college.
“Medyo hindi siya makaexpress, eh,” says Reyes, who went on to become a three-time UAAP champion with the De La Salle Lady Archers. “Pero pinapakita niya through actions, nahihiya lang sya siguro!”
De Leon agrees, “Para syang cheerleader ko, pinapakita niya sa akin kung paano tumayo, kasi siya diba poised and very charming sya. Tinuturuan nya ako sa mga ganito.”
In college, the two being hotshots on the hard court smoothly became sensations online and beyond. Both as individuals and as a hot twosome, Reyes and de Leon would get TV guestings, magazine shoots, and even sponsorships together. They would appear in events together, too. We could only wish for more even now that they’re both done with school.
Have they ever encountered fights? Of course, but no major ones but only those that had them turn a cold shoulder over the other, says Reyes. “Hindi kami naguusap. Pinapalipas lang.”
De Leon adds, ”Actually, good thing na same kami na volleyball player, kahit interest of our sport, pareho kami. At nagkakaintindihan kami sa mga ginagawa namin.”
As for Reyes, the best part about their years-long, rivalry-riddled but otherwise finer-by-age friendship is “Yung masasabi mo yung mga hindi mo kayang sabihin sa iba. May ka-outlet ka. At syempre, may makasama ka when you want to hang out, may mahihila ka agad.”
