Currently winless this season, the CSB Blazers has a lot to improve on. With some blaming the loss of last year’s savior Jonathan Grey who has left for PBA D-League, the Gabby Velasco-coached team remains optimistic. Why else would they be so serious in trainings if not being keen on making it?
“It’s usually serious all the time. Our coach yells a lot, but sometimes we joke around but for the most part, it’s really serious,” forward Fonsy Saavedra on his last playing year describes the kind of training the Taft-based squad goes through.
“We always keep it serious and focused,” adds Christian Fajarito.
Optimism is still the name of Benilde’s game so they can clinch that Final Four dream.
“Gusto kong umangat yung rank namin. Lahat naman kami yan yung gusto. Kung hindi mag champion, kahit makapasok lang sa final four,” Fajarito stresses.
“I want the impression towards CSB to change. Gusto ko mabago ang culture ng CSB,” JJ Domingo adds.
Off the court, the Blazers remain super close as a way to strengthen their teamwork. DOTA plus “kulitan and kwentuhan” are not uncommon ways of bro-bonding with these guys. Learn more about their bromance here!
What’s it like living together at the dorm?
JJD: Sa dorm, hindi mawawala ang kulitan. Kahit gabi na, ingay pa rin! That’s part of our bonding.
CF: Lagi kaming nagkwekwentohan, nagpapatugtog ng malakas. Kapag sinasbihan, aayos rin kami.
How do you deal with fights?
FS: It’s usually just on the court. We usually fix it so it never leaves the court. We’ve never really fought about anything other than basketball. If it’s not on court, we’ll just go out, chill and talk it over.
JJD: I have gotten into a fight with my teammate. The pressure of the games just got to me. My teammates spoke to me like a brother and the next day we were okay. Parang walang nangyari we just forgave and forgot.
How do you deal with crushing on just one girl?
FS: Sharing is caring. Ha ha! We’re joking! That’s a joke!
Christian: Yung team crush, Arci Munoz! After watching her movie, we fight about her in the dorm, Laging, “Sa akin si Arcy! Hindi, akin yan!”
Where have you guys gone together?
FS: Malaysia, Iloilo, Bacolod, Batangas. It was fun. Like having 15 brothers hang out, late night, listening to music, talking. It was a lot of fun!
JJD: Parang mga kapatid, nag-e-enjoy. Malayo kami. Yung time nay an, sinusulit natin. Bihira lang kami magkakasama ng ganyan.
CF: Enjoy lang. Parang nagrelax.
What’s the wildest stuff you’ve done together?
FS: We just go out in the town, drink, visit some bars. Usually in Central, near Taft or Sherwood.
What’s your common interest as a team?
FS: What truly brings us together is basketball. What brings us the closest is DOTA. We usually play for a few hours after class.
Who’s the team heartthrob?
FS: Jonathan Grey! He graduated last year, but to this day, it’s Jonathan Grey
JJD: I think it’s Fons, eh. The girls are always asking, “Oh is Fonsy still playing? I’m going to watch because of Fonsy!”
CF: Minsan si Joshua de Sequera. Kasi siya yung model namin. Oh kaya ako hahaha!
Who’s the fashionista?
FS: JJ. He always has the freshest shoes, the nicest clothes.
JJD: My brother inspires me. He likes to buy shoes and he used to sell Jordan’s. So every time Makita ko yun, try ko yata.
Who’s the coolest one?
JJD: Si Christian dahil kahit pinapagalitan na siya, coach Gab is yelling at him na. Bonding bonding lang, relax na relax. Parang kala mo hindi siya pinapagalitan. Tumatawa lang
Christian: Syempre buhay, ganun lang. Dapat mag enjoy.
Who’s the nerdiest?
Christian: Yung kambal natin—JJ and JS and Carlo Young!
JJ: Oo may twin ako. Importante talaga yung studies. Kasi para sa amin, you have a scholarship tapos, you’re studying sa La salle, csb, iba yung dating nun. Kaya inaingatan natin yan. Kahit athlete kami, inaunahan natin ang studies. Kasi basketball will not always be around. The key is to study hard before anything else.
Who’s the funniest?
FS: Dino San Juan. Cause he keeps up with all the trends, what’s viral. He always knows what’s up. Like the running man challenge, he was the first of us to catch on.
