On the powerhouse team from Taft, CSB Blazers’ Johnvic de Guzman stands out not just for his soaring spikes. He was a vital cog in his team’s NCAA Season 90 Finals appearance and a Final Four spot in the year that followed. That, plus being the quintessential “tall, dark, and handsome” would have cut it for him to be the subject of many fans’ fantasies; but mind you he’s also this talented. It’s no wonder why this star is heavily followed online.
Did you know that before becoming a man of the volley, De Guzman was first a badminton player? To get to the net, he received encouragement from former volleyball players, mom and sister. It wasn’t bad as it has since opened doors for him; aside from a spot on the CSB squad, he is also a member of the national team and PLDT Home Ultera—yes, next to everyone’s idols, Mika Reyes and Alyssa Valdez.
“At first, I hated heavy trainings but since it is part of being an athlete I eventually loved the pain from it and enjoyed volleyball which is now my passion,” the shy no-secret “Mama’s boy” tells us.
De Guzman juggles sports with modeling and, just recently, acting. (He also shares he loves to sing!) He is a talent under the star-studded agency Virtual Playground, next to Brandon Vera and some of the biggest student-athletes the NCAA and UAAP have now. For his debut in cinema, he is set to star in Erik Matti’s Seklusyon under Reality Entertainment, alongside Dominic Roque and Hashtag’s Ronnie Alonte. Who knows if the film will see its release in the yearly and most-anticipated MMFF?
"I want to own a company, tour my family around the world, and make them proud!"
De Guzman's motto? "Live life to the fullest!” Know the rest of how he does it on his Instagram!—Interview by Rochelle Gonzales for Chalk Magazine
