Are we expecting a fourth title by November 19?

Six finishes at eighth, and two at the bottom two. The rest of their tournament results before recent years? Admittedly, buried far under every cheerdance fan’s memory.

For many years spanning the UAAP CDC, the NU Pep Squad struggled as cellar dwellers—until 2012, when they podiumed for the first time. A year later, the Ghicka Bernabe-coached team made history winning their first title in the tournament. NU that year pulled off a slithering Arabian-themed routine to wow the crowds and topple then crowd favorite UP Pep Squad. In the next year, NU went Native American for a back-to-back win. They gunned for their third last season in ferocious “caveman”-inspired show. NU’s hard-earned championships always is a photogenic spectacle to us men of the media—tears of joy showing those arduous trainings that were.

We could only remember former captain Justice Gimeno telling us about NU’s vision: “Mas marami nang tumitingin sa amin kasi biglang nag-exist yung NU sa cheerdance.”

Truly, the NU Pep Squad has stepped out far from the shadows and is fast making themselves the new favorite. Apart from the UAAP CDC, the team has also proven themselves worthy— three National Cheerleading Championships titles all in five years now. As we anticipate their UAAP CDC 2016 performance in less than two weeks—many are expecting that they’d be the best being the past performers—let’s relive the team’s winning routines that sealed their three-year streak!
