What used to be part of a weight loss project for UE Pep Squad captain Jerome Montenegro became something more, thanks to the level of competition at the UAAP CDC. “I decided to audition sa UE Pep Squad (dahil) sabi ko sa sarili ko challenging to para sakin kasi napakataba ko nung high school ako,” recalls the 19 year-old Broadcasting student, who got into cheerleading by joining Intramurals in high school. Montenegro is now more eager than ever to pluck UE out of the cellar and back to the ranks this year—Recto’s sole podium place in UAAP CDC history is their Season 65 second place finish. “Ang goal ko talaga bukod sa magaral sa magandang university is to win with UE kasi matagal nang hindi nananalo ang school namin sa CDC at gusto ko na kasama ako sa panalo na yun!” And it seems that UE Pep Squad has the chops this season to back their goal up, having won second runner-up at the National Cheerleading Championship (NCC) Co-ed Elite division and first runner-up at the NCC NCR 2016. Will we see a shocker—Red Warrior style—later? We could only wait and see!

How has your training been for UAAP CDC?
“Mahirap pero worth it. Masaya dahil bukod sa training at conditioning, there comes a time na pati sila coach nakikisama sa mga kalokohan at tawanan namin.”

How do you bond in the team?
“We treat ourselves as family. Through ups and down, parati kaming nagtutulungan mapa academics, financial, health and even personal issues. Kasi naniniwala ako na lahat ay malalagpasan kung sama-sama… Kadalasan makarinig lang ng kakaibang music magsasayawan na ang lahat at minsan showdown pa ang labanan.”

What makes your team different from the rest of the squads?
We have the characteristic of being a Warrior, kahit anong mangyare lalaban at lalaban kame lalo na ngayong taon.

Which squad is your biggest competition this year, and why?
“We all (see) them as our opponents, wala kaming minemenos kasi lahat ay malakas. But we’re eyeing to fight the squads who finished in the podium last year like NU and UST.”

Tease us about your theme tomorrow.
“We are going to travel around the world.”
