“Mainit ang labanan!” Alyssa Valdez answered when asked about her thoughts watching the #KapamilyaPlayoffs2016 held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last Sunday. The third quarter was almost nearing its end when the game’s hosts and “courtside reporters,” comedians Negi and Eric Nicolas came up to her watching from the bench for a short Q&A.
Valdez then explained that she went to support not just the ABS-CBN S+A crew behind the star-studded game, but also the basketball-playing actors who headlined the event.
The friendly, of course, featured an all-star ensemble, a match between two teams with today’s hottest matinee idols as captains of their eponymous squads. Star of upcoming teleserye Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, Gerald Anderson, led Team Gerald, which included Young JV Kapunan, Rayver Cruz, Ejay Falcon, Jayson Abalos, Matt Evans, Diego Loyzaga, Ejay Falcon, Jimboy Martin, Gerhard Acao, and Joe Vargas. Actor and singer Daniel Padilla headed Team Daniel, comprising Joseph Marco, Anjo Damiles, Marco Gumabao, Patrick Sugui, Vin Abrenica; Hashtag members Ronnie Alonte, Jon Lucas, and Paolo Angeles; and erstwhile basketball players Zanjoe Marudo, Xian Lim, and Axel Torres. Philippine basketball legends Jerry Codiñera and Alvin Patrimonio acted as coaches, respectively.
Team Gerald ruled until halftime, 50-43, with Anderson bannering with 26 points. The third quarter saw Team Daniel rallying as they stole the game, 69 against their opponent’s 64. Team Daniel, with the help of its captain, and standouts Alonte and eventual MVP Torres, then worked to win the match in dramatic fashion, 96-93.
Valdez made a special appearance at the end of the game, by gracing the awarding ceremony. We caught up again with The Phenom (by then, she still had difficulty escaping the sight of some fans), who couldn’t help but give props to the players.
“Siguro, iba lang yung crowd nito sa isang UAAP basketball game, but the intensity of the game is the same,” she said.
“Na-impress ako kasi ang galing nila, andun yung level of competitiveness nila. Kasi pag iisipin mo as an artista, iisipin mo hindi nila ibibigay talaga. Pero they were really, like, super athletes talaga! They really want to win! So, nakita ko yung passion nila na para na din silang athletes.”
