What are the three most important characteristics of a "perfect" cushioning system?
Any professional athlete or sports aficionado anywhere in the world knows about the limitations of former and current techonology in footwear.
Recent developments, aided by advancements in production and research have come out in recent years, but the perfect sports shoe in terms of impact protection that ticks all three important boxes are still unavailable.
What are the three most important characteristics of a "perfect" cushioning system, you ask? First of all, it has to be light enough to not hinder an athlete's performance.
Second, it has to be resilient enough to go toe-to-toe with the wearer's supreme athleticism. Every burst of speed, change of direction, or landing, should be able to deliver great energy return.
So far, those two components are already taken care of in majority of commercial footwear.
The third, and most important component is where the technology seems to be lagging behind.
Before a footwear cushioning system is to be deemed perfect, it has to comply with those two needs, but it also has to be durable. Durable enough to sustain the rigors that a particular sport entail.
While the technology is more or less left wanting, that's all about to change if Nike is to be believed.
With its new React system of cushioning, the sports brand aims to hold the key for revolutionizing impact protection for athletes of any sport.
The hurdle of connecting on all of those key components was the impetus for Nike to come up with the React system.
Its innovation team, including cushioning experts and chemical engineers, came together to develop a foam that could offer all three benefits at once.
The result, they said, is Nike React, the brand's latest cushioning innovation that they consider a significant breakthrough in footwear foam.
After fine-tuning the chemistry over hundreds of iterations — using scientific methods to dial in on materials with certain amenable attributes, the brand saw the prime composition of materials that yielded the perfect outcome.
While there are many immediate performance benefits, no sport tests against the three principles of Nike React as fluidly as basketball.
The need to shift direction and speed in seamless motion, and to lift off at the blink of an eye pushes a shoe to its limits.
It’s a balance not seen in any other Nike basketball cushioning, and it will enable athletes to do more and go further.
The new cushioning system is first utilized in the Jordan Super.Fly 2017, the player exclusive shoe of Blake Griffin, and the Nike React Hyperdunk 2017, debuted by Draymond Green.
Each shoe contains a fully encased full-length Nike React core that reacts swiftly to each step, bouncing back to its original state, ensuring a consistent underfoot feel minute after minute, game after game.
Nike React is part of Nike’s cushioning revolution, redefining what’s possible with foam and other cushioning platforms — such as Nike Air VaporMax and Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% featuring ZoomX — to deliver options for every athlete.
The Nike React Hyperdunk 2017 and the Jordan Super.Fly 2017 will be released globally on August 3.
