Get to know more about Ateneo's new sensation Tyler Tio
GET TO KNOW: Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle Tyler Tio.

Tyler Tio scored 10 points in a two-minute span to let Ateneo de Manila University run away, once and for all, from University of the Philippines last Wednesday.

He eventually ended his UAAP debut with 14 points all while converting six of his attempts.

Still, it was his flurry in the final frame that gave everybody a glimpse of just what the Blue Eagles have in their hands.

Let’s give ourselves a few more glimpses, 10 to be exact, at Katipunan’s latest promising player.

He only became a Filipino citizen this year

Tio is the son of Philippine-born parents who later became Canadian citizens. As such, he is also a Canadian citizen.

That is, until May of this year when he finally obtained his Filipino citizenship.

And so, the issue that forced him to sit out one season in the UAAP was resolved, making him eligible to play in Season 80.

He starred for Xavier School, the alma mater of Jeron Teng and Chris Tiu

Technically, Tio was a Canadian citizen before he obtained his Filipino citizenship in May of this year.

However, he has long been in the Philippines and actually completed his elementary and high school here.

He even played, and led the charge, for the Xavier Golden Stallions.

Yes, that is the same Xavier which has produced the likes of Joseph Yeo, TY Tang, Jeric Teng, Jeron Teng, and Isaac Go.

As well as little someone from Ateneo whom you may know? Does the name Chris Tiu ring any bells?

He is only 19-years old

Making Tio’s debut even more impressive is the fact that he is only 19-years young.

Also, he was yet to play in a UAAP, or even NCAA, game. You know, the two foremost collegiate and high school leagues in the country?

And yet, matched up against veterans such as Diego Dario, Jarrell Lim, and Jun Manzo, Tio shone.

Not bad for a teen. Not bad at all.

He will not be eligible for Rookie of the Year

Unfortunately, Tio is not a true freshman in the league after having to sit out all of last season due to an eligibility issue.

And only true freshmen could contend for Rookie of the Year.

That is unfortunate because if he keeps up what he did against UP, he may very well have given early-season award favorite Juan Gomez de Liano a run for his money.

He is close with his family

Tio loves his father.

He loves his mother.

And he also loves his brother.

That only makes us love him even more.

He was one of the prizes in the stacked recruitment class of 2016

De La Salle University came away with one of the biggest hauls of recruits straight out of high school a year ago.

The Green Archers welcomed with open arms UAAP champion Justine Baltazar, UAAP Jrs. MVP Aljun Melecio, and NCAA Jrs. MVP Ricci Rivero.

Still, Ateneo wasn’t sweating because they had a big-time commitment of their own in Tio who had been mentioned in the same breath as those three.

If only an eligibility issue didn’t stand in the way, we could have already seen a gunslinging duel between Tio and Melecio in the Finals. Don’t tell us you don’t want to see that.

He also considered committing to DLSU

Or perhaps, we could’ve seen a gunslinging backcourt form in Taft Avenue.

Tio and Melecio could have been teammates, if only the former would have gone with his other option.

Ultimately, however, Tio went with Ateneo to be able to major in Management Economics.

He is a dog lover

He was once a Jr. NBA All-Star

Long before he was Ateneo’s latest promising player and even before he was the main man for Xavier, Tio opened eyes in the Jr. NBA.

Tio was one of the 10 best young basketball players in the Philippines back in 2013, according to the Jr. NBA.

That was the origin of what would be an inevitable rise for him.

Are they? Or aren’t they?

Bad news for all of us who found our new crush in Tio.

It looks like he’s no longer available.

And-i...... will always love view @_andiloo Happy 18th birthday!
