Ponggay Gaston's new hair is more than a fashion statement.
Ateneo Lady Eagles outside hitter Ponggay Gaston stunned fans on Twitter when she was seen Friday afternoon rocking a new shorter “pixie” hairstyle during their UAAP season 80 photoshoot in ABS-CBN.
Far from the long, flowing locks from seasons past, Gaston’s shorter hair was both a fashion choice, and a social statement as well. “I wanted to be like Eleven from hit Netlfix series ‘Stranger Things’ and Natalie Portman’s character in ‘V for Vendetta’,” she bared.
Ponggay, a bubbly presence on the court for Ateneo, is of course talking about two fictional characters in TV and in film who she felt best represented the empowerment of women.
“Wala lang, I think that there is more to a woman than her hair,” she said, after revealing that she actually had the haircut right before Christmas last year.
While Gaston originally wanted to emulate the shaved hairstyles popularized by Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, and Evey Hammond, played by Natalie Portman in the 2006 film, she compromised for a slightly longer cut.
“I wanted to make it really semi-kalbo, I wanted it short,” Gaston shared, “But then they wouldn’t let me cut it that short.”

Ever the trendsetter, Gaston, who also used to be a runway model, had nothing but positive reactions from her peers, after the initial surprise, of course.
“They were shocked because I’ve always had long hair. But then, you know, what choice do they got, they’re going to see it everyday,” she said. “They liked it naman.”
With the season already near, Ponggay says she’d let her hair grow back until the UAAP wars end, then she’ll push for her original plan.
“I think I’m gonna go for my goal, which is to make it really shaved. Maybe after [the season],” Gaston shared.
While fans are yet to get used to Gaston’s new hair, they’ll get to see the outside hitter step up for Ateneo when the Lady Eagles open their bid this February 4 against FEU at the Mall of Asia Arena.
