During San Mig Coffee's historic Grand Slam run, Mark Barroca stuck with one sneaker, his "lucky charm" so to speak.
Basketball players are one of the most superstitious people ever.
To win enough basketball games, it's not about all talent after all. Luck plays a huge part too.
Magnolia's Mark Barroca is a pretty talented dude, he's also lucky in a sense, landing in a premier franchise in the Hotshots and is a many-time PBA champion.
He's also not a known sneakerhead.
Still, Barroca has one of the more interesting Sneaker Stories out there, as he's stuck with one particular model during the defining moment of his career so far.
Barroca emerged as an absolute PBA star and one of the best point guards in the league when San Mig Coffee won four straight titles from 2013 to 2014 on the way to a Grand Slam season.
During that historic run, Barroca stuck with one sneaker, the sleek all-black version of the Nike Hyperdunk 2013.
"Hangang ngayon kini-keep ko ito," Barroca said of his Hyperdunks that have officially reached beaters status.
"Sabi ko, lucky charm yan eh," he added.
Barroca stayed loyal to his lucky Hyperdunks that former coach Tim Cone was forced to intervene.
"Nabubutas na sa sobra kong gusto," Barroca said.
"Pinagalitan na nga ako ni [coach] Tim Cone dati. Bakit ayaw ko daw magpalit ng shoes? Putol na sintas eh, tinatali ko lang," he added.
Appearing on the PBA's Kamustahan video special, Barroca revealed his Sneaker Story, adding that used to be happy with just one pair to play with.
"Since college, kasi galing akong Zamboanga, so wala [shoes]. Tuwang-tuwa na ako na maka-shoes lang kahit isa," he added.
"Yung panlaro namin isang sapatos, tsaka minsan isang tsinelas para makalaro lang," Barroca added.
Now with more than enough kicks lying around, Barroca plans to give back. However, everyone knows his lucky charms are not going anywhere.
"May plano ako, yung high school kung saan ako galing, mamimigay ako ng sapatos doon. I-bless ko lang sila," he said.
"Ibibigay ko na lang lalo na doon sa mga nangangailangan. Sa mga kaibigan, sa mga kakilala. Yung mga hindi maka-afford ng sapatos. Ang mahal-mahal ng sapatos ngayon eh," Barroca added.
