UAAP 77 Men’s Lawn Tennis: UST, UP, NU Score First Round Win
UST, UP and defending champion NU opened the UAAP 77 men's lawn tennis tournament with wins.

The UAAP 77 Men’s Lawn Tennis kicked off last weekend at the Olivarez Sports Center, with University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, and defending champions National University all recording first round wins. 

In the first day of action last Saturday, January 10, UST kicked things off with a 3-2 win over De La Salle. UST’s Bernanlou Bering gave the Tigers and early lead after beating Kyle Parpan 6-3, 6-3. The Archers bounced back and took the lead however, after L.A. Canizares and Alberto Villamor were victorious in their respective singles matches.  UST sealed their day one win thanks to doubles wins by the tandem of Joel Cabusas and Bernlo Leroy Bering who bested Dale Gorospe and Akio, Sy 7-5, 6-3 and the tandem of Jeff Patino and Alfrancis Potutan who defeated Ernesto Pantua and Qoqo Allian, 7-5, 6-3.

In Tie 2, defending champs NU dominated University of the East, 4-1. Season 76 MVP Fritz Verdad coasted to a 6-1, 6-1, win over UE’s Rogelio Estano, while Leander Lazaro and Dheo Talatayod also notched singles wins. UE’s tandem of Ivan Olo and Menrado Soriano tallied the only set win for UE by defeating JJ Accion and Arc Dolorito 7-6, 6-3. NU’s tandem of Jigo Pena and Almichael Madrio put UE away by defeating RJ Saga and Jelardo Amazona, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Closing out the first day of action was UP, who breezed through Ateneo de Manila, 4-1. Joshua Miranda opened the opened the singles matches for the Maroons as he beat Iyo Canlas, 6-4, 6-3 followed by Angelo Esguerra who ran through Ralph Antonio, 6-0, 6-0. The Blue Eagles only win came from the third singles match, with Ino Canlas beating Mikko Ringia, 6-4, 6-1. UP also swept the doubles matches, with Encarnacion and Mariano edging out Ateneo’s Punzalan and Rivera, 6-4, 6-4 while Ferrer and Belda defeated the Eagles’ Gatdula and Exconde, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.


Day two of the first round took place last Sunday, January 11, with UST, UP and NU again coming out on top.

UST came away with a dominant 4-1 win over UE with Francis Lanzado beating Joshua Kindaman 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, Bernanlou Bering beating Rodolfo Barquin 6-3, 6-3, and Francisco Santos beating Paulo Baran 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to sweep all three singles matches. In the first doubles match, UE came away victorious as RJ Saga and Rogelio Estanio bested Alfrancis Potutan and Benlo Leroy Bering 6-3, 6-1. The Tigers bounced back in the second doubles contest with the tandem of Joel Cabusas and Jeff Patino egding out Menrado Soriano and Jelardo Amazona 7-6, 6-1.

UP took a close 3-2 win over DLSU, thanks to a sweep in the doubles matches. Alberto Villamor and LA Canizares helped the Archers gain a 2-1 lead after the singles matches, with Angelo Esguerra providing the lone singles win for the Maroons via a 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 win over Kyle Parpan. The doubles tandems saved the day for the Diliman-based tennisters, as Reynaldo Mariano and Franklin Encarnacion beat Akio Sy and Dale Gorospe 6-2, 6-3, while Enrique Ferrer and Miguel Belda sealed the win for State U with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Ernesto Pantua and Qoqo Allian.

NU continued to show their championship form with a 4-1 win over Ateneo, led by Fritz Verdad’s 6-0, 6-1 domination over Vernon Huibonha. Ino Canlas evened things up for the Eagles with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Leander Lazaro, but the Bulldogs eventually ran away with the contest as Dheo Talatayod beat Ralph Antonio 6-0, 6-3 in the 3rd singles match while the tandem of Almichael Madrio and Jigo Pena beat Anton Punzalan and Erj Gatdula 7-5, 6-1. JJ Accion and Francis Alcantara finished the second doubles match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over AJ Rivero and Johan Exconde.
