Expect a bigger, more exciting IPTL season this year
Following a successful first season in 2014, the International Premiere Tennis League or IPTL comes back to Manila this coming December 6-8, 2015 for the second leg of its second season.
Last year’s stop in Manila drew over 30,000 fans over the course of a three-day tournament, featuring some of the biggest names in tennis such as Maria Sharapova, Andy Murray, and Serena Williams. This year, with more stars lined up and the addition of a fifth team in the Japan Warriors, expect a bigger and more excited crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“The Philippines will be another exciting leg of the IPTL’s tour,” said IPTL Vice President of Operations Abshiek Ponia.
There will be an even bigger reason for fans to flock the Mall of Asia Arena this year, as the renamed Philippine Mavericks will be headlined by none other than women’s world number one, Serena Williams. She, along with teammates Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Sabine Lisicki, Treat Huey, and more will be representing the country against four other teams in the tournament.
Team manager Jean-Henri Llhuillher could not be more excited about the current Philippine Mavericks lineup.
“We are proud of have the no. 1 ranked single women’s player, Serena Williams, headlining the Philippine Mavericks this season. We believe that she and her fellow teammates Tsonga, Gasquet, Lisicki, Gajdosova, Huey and team captain Philippoussis will bring home the winning title this year.”
Aside from the three day tournament itself, Philippine Mavericks co-owner and SM Lifestyle Entertainment Incorporated President Edgar Tejerero also announced that there would be activities leading up to the IPTL event, and wishes that the fans would take part in those activities as well.
“Bringing in the top tennis players of the world to our shores is a milestone for our country. We want the fans to be part of a yearlong celebration instead of a mere 3-day tournament.”
Other big names expected to compete in the 2015 IPTL tournament are Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, and Ana Ivancovic of the UAE Royals, Rafael Nadal of the Indian Aces, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios of the Singapore Slammers, and Maria Sharapova and Kei Nishikori of the newly formed Japan Warriors.
