2015 French Open Roundup: Top seeds Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic advance to third round

Top seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic maintained their hold of the top spot in their respective divisions after advancing into the third round in day five of the 2015 French Open.

Day five opened up with an upset with unranked Julia Gorges taking down women’s number five ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark,  6–4, 7–6(7–4), while Spain’s Rafael Nadal and the UK’s Andy Murray both scored wins, defeating Spain’s Nicolas Almagro and Montenegro’s Joao Souza respectively.

Women's Singles 2nd Round: Julia Görges def. Caroline Wozniacki (6–4, 7–6(7–4))

Men's Singles 2nd Round: Rafael Nadal def. Nicolás Almagro (6–4, 6–3, 6–1)

Men's Singles 2nd Round: Andy Murray def. João Sousa (6–2, 4–6, 6–4, 6–1)

Women's Singles 2nd Round: Kristina Mladenovic def. Danka Kovinić (6–3, 7–5)

 

Over on Court Suzanne Lenglen, top seeds Serena Williams of the USA and Novak Djokovic of Serbia both advance into the third round following wins over Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam and Luxemborg’s Gilles Muller respectively.

Men's Singles 2nd Round:  Novak Djokovic def. Gilles Müller (6–1, 6–4, 6–4)

Men's Singles 2nd Round: Richard Gasquet vs. Carlos Berlocq (3–6, 6–3, 6–1, 4–6, suspended)

Women's Singles 2nd Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Svetlana Kuznetsova (6–7(11–13), 7–5, 10–8)

Women's Singles 2nd Round: Victoria Azarenka def. Republic Lucie Hradecká (6–2, 6–3)

Men's Singles 2nd Round: Jérémy Chardy def. United States John Isner (6–4, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3)

 

After day five, Djokovic still remains on top of the men’s singles leaderboard, while Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych, and Kei Nishikori round out the top five. Rafael Nadal still sits just outside at sixth place.

In the women’s singles leaderboard, Williams holds down the top spot, while Maria Sharapova trails in second place. Third and fifth seeds Simona Halep and Wozniacki have been eliminated from competition, while Petra Kvitova and Ana Ivancovic sit at fourth and seventh respectively.
