Australia’s Nick Kyrgios was victorious in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal last Wednesday, beating Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka after the latter had to retire because he wasn’t feeling too well.
Sadly, that wasn’t the only bad news that “Stan the Man” received that day.
The outspoken Kyrgios had something to say to Wawrinka that maybe should have been said in private, but instead was heard ‘round the world…
KOKKINAKIS DID WHAT??
If the audio wasn’t clear enough, Kyrgios told Wawrinka that “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend…”
The Aussie tried to somehow soften the blow by ending with “Sorry to tell you that, mate.”
Following the match, Kyrgios admitted that he really wasn’t sure about what he said, and that it was just in the heat of the moment.
The statement from Kyrgios was based on the mixed doubles pairing of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Donna Vekic. Vekic has been reportedly dating Wawrinka, following the Swiss star’s separation from his wife.
Obviously, it didn't sit well with Wawrinka though, who took to Twitter to express his disappointment for Kyrgios…
So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way I could never even imagine.— Stanislas Wawrinka (@stanwawrinka) August 13, 2015
What was said I wouldn't say to my worst enemy. To stop so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief.— Stanislas Wawrinka (@stanwawrinka) August 13, 2015
For reference, here’s Kokkinakis…
…and here’s Vekic (yes, she’s only 19)
