Grand Slam champion Serena Williams arrived in the Philippines Saturday to help the Mavericks protect their home turf.
The world’s brightest tennis stars collide for three days of tough competition as the International Premier Tennis League 2015 makes its second stop in Manila on Sunday.
All eyes are set at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City with the home team Philippine Mavericks looking to give local fans a great showing after a 1-1 win-loss record in the opening leg in Kobe, Japan last week.
Power-smashing American Serena Williams, currently the world’s No.1 female player and winner of 21 Grand Slam titles, will team up with Milos Raonic, Mark Philippoussis, Richard Gasquet, Ajla Tomljanovic, Jarmila Gajdosova, Edouard Roger Vasselin and local hero and playing coach Treat Huey in the Mavericks home stand.
The Mavericks will take on unbeaten OBI United Arab Emirates Royals in the featured 7:30 p.m. match of the two-tie playdate.
Roger Federer, Ana Ivanovic, Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic, Goran Ivanisevic, Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic banner the Royals, who are coming off convincing victories against OUE Singapore Slammers and Legendari Japan Warriors.
The Mavericks opened their campaign in a tough 24-26 loss to the Slammers last Thursday before regrouping the day after to take down the Warriors, 28-26, in this exciting team tournament that features a shot clock, allows player substitution, power point calls and tiebreak shootout.
Meanwhile, listless Legendari Japan and OUE Singapore clash in the 4:00 p.m. curtain-raiser.
The Slammers hold a 1-2 record in fourth place while the Warriors dropped all their three ties.
Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal, a 14-time majors winner, arrived late Saturday night and will play for the Micromax Indian Aces on Monday against the Royals and the Mavericks on Tuesday.
The Aces share the lead with a 2-0 mark.
