Former world juniors number nine Jeson Patrombon claimed his first win over Abdulrahman Alawadhi of Kuwait, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippines Davis Cup Team a head start on opening round.
Former world juniors No.9, Jeson Patrombon crushed Abdulrahman Alawadhi of Kuwait, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 in the best of five matches, to provide a strong start for the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team in the opening round of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/OCEANIA group, Friday at Valle Verde Country Club.
In a high-octane shell-court duel where both ace men exchanged spectacular rallies and a couple of deuces, the Filipino Davis Cupper capitalized through his heady returns against his more error-prone opponent. From snatching the opening set in six straight games, Patrombon took over the reins and dictated the pace to win the opening match.
After keeping his composure when Alawadhi threatened to tie the games in the second set, 3-2, Jeson pulled-off almost impossible saves and drop shots to keep the momentum on his side. Alawadhi, on the other hand, just couldn’t get his game going, leading to a frustrating loss after only three sets.
"As of press time, this is a great start to our campaign. Jeson played superbly and I'm looking forward to Ruben duplicating his feat. We really have a great team out there and I strongly believe we'll wrap up this match by Saturday," said team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier.
It’s a good start for Jeson and team Philippines, but for Jean Henri Lhuillier, who is also the chairman of the board of the Philippine Tennis Association and a true patron of Philippine sports, he envisions a world class calibre in every Filipino athlete and bagging the Asia/Oceania division will be a huge step to land on the World Group stage, another shot to grace the international playing field.
