Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team member Ruben Gonzales with team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier.Philippine tennis is on an upswing. Following the exploits of world top 20 doubles player Treat Huey, who made a historic semi-finals finish at the 2016 Wimbledon Open, another member of the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team, Ruben Gonzales, made the country proud by winning the doubles crown of an ITF Futures tournament in France.
"This is another good news for Philippine tennis. Ruben and Treat have shown the past week that Filipinos can be a force to be reckoned with in tennis. I'm so happy that our Davis Cup players are peaking at the right time and are showing that they are ready for the upcoming battle against Chinese Taipei. I'm very confident that our boys will perform well and win this match. Our goal is to move back to the Group 1 of Asia Oceania of the Davis Cup competitions,” said Jean Henri Lhuilier, team manager of the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team.
Gonzales won the title with his partner from the USA, Catalin Gard, after defeating the tandem of Marc Fornell-Mestress of Spain and Lamine Quahab of Morrocco, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Gonzales and Huey are part of the Cebuana Lhuilier-Philippine Davis Cup team that will go up against 2015 tormentor Chinese-Taipei. Other members of the team are former world junior standouts Jeson Patromnon and Francis Casey Alcantara. Non-playing captain is Karl Sta. Maria.
The match with Chinese Taipei is slated on July 15-17 at the Philippine Columbian Association after the draw on July 14.
