SYDNEY (AP) — Australia's Nick Kyrgios will play Andrej Martin and Bernard Tomic will take on Jozef Kovalik in opening-day singles matches Friday in a Davis Cup World Group playoff against Slovakia.
The winner of the weekend matches on a grass court laid over the regular hardcourt at the Sydney's Olympic park will compete in the 16-team World Group for 2017. The draw was held Thursday.
Sam Groth and John Peers will take on the Slovakian doubles team of Martin and Igor Zelenay on Saturday before reverse singles on Sunday.
Australia has won the Davis Cup 28 times — second only to the United States' 32 — but hasn't won the trophy since 2003, Australia's longest drought since before World War II. Australia lost to the U.S. in the first round this year.
