Tennis: Pinoy Garcia, Thai partner victorious in Sri Lanka tournament

Rising Pinoy tennis star Matthew Garcia and his Thai partner Tanapat Nirudorn come up victorious in the first week of ITF Junior Grade 5 Sri Lanka Tennis Championships held last Sept. 3-9 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The 16-year old Garcia is the son of former tennis player and ABS-CBN correspondent Dyan Castillejo teamed up with the 15-year old Nirudorn to rule the 18 and under boys doubles category.
The duo from South East Asia outlasted Subash Paramasivam of India and Arjun Sriram of the US, 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.
Prior to that, Garcia and Nirudorn were locked in a tight battle against Tejasvi R Mehra and Sandeep VM of India, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The Filipino-Thai duo qualified to the semis by defeating Aashutosh Kulakarni Prachet of India and Hitaesh Praveen, 7-5, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Garcia and Nirudorn, who were seeded fourth in the tournament, first beat Li Zixuan of China and Jasza Szajrych of Poland, 6-1, 7-6 (1).
In the second week of the tournament, which runs throughout this weekend, the duo rode on their momentum and won their next two matches.
They upset top-seeded Prasanna Pravin Bagade and Kushan Shah of India, 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round before dispatching Luca Emanuel Knese of Germany and Kavisha Ratnayake of the host country, 6-2, 6-4.
