Former Philippine Tennis number one Alex Marcial was awarded the 2019 USPTA Star Coach Award

Philippine Tennis Legend Alexander “Alex” Marcial was awarded the 2019 USPTA Star Coach Award.

The Star Coach Award is given to a USPTA member who has consistently performed in promoting the game of tennis in the United States and Worldwide. Alex, founder of the non-profit group FOPT (Friends of Philippine Tennis), was recognized for providing equipment support (racquets, balls, shoes, nets and more) for free to junior tennis players in the Philippines. Alex is the first Filipino and Asian awardee of the USPTA. 

Marcial is a former Philippine Tennis Number 1 in singles and doubles. A two time SEA Games Gold Medalist (1981 Mens doubles with Rodolfo Ody Gabriel) and (1981 Mixed doubles with Pia Tamayo), an ATP (Association of Tennis Professional) campaigner with wins over Top 100 players, and a Davis Cup player with over 100 international ties played.

Alex, currently is a tennis coach in the US, resides in West Covina, Los Angeles, is a doting grandfather to his grandson and grandaughters, married to the former Tita Acevedo, has two sons Alexi and Brian. 

USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) is the largest tennis coaches association in the United States, founded in 1927. It currently has a membership of over 10,000 coaches in the United States and Internationally.

Recently, it was certified and was made a teaching partner by the USTA (United States Tennis Association). It annually, conducts tennis coaching certification and a national tennis congress. Among USPTA many projects is the awarding and recognizing of outstanding contributions by its members to the tennis community in the technical and humanitarian aspects of the game. ( and 

FOPT (Friends of Philippine Tennis) is a non profit community based group founded by Marcial in 2015 to provide used equipment (racquets, strings, shoes, apparel, tennis nets, bags and more) to budding junior tennis players in the Philippines.

FOPT runs a yearly Philippine Tennis Tour, where it conducts free junior tennis clinics and tennis coaching workshops. FOPT is supported by Filipino coaches and tennis enthusiasts residing in the USA, they provide used tennis items as well as financial support.

In the Philippines, local FOPT supporters provide logistical and financial support to be able to conduct the Philippine Tennis tour throughout the country. In 2020, FOPT is scheduled to conduct its 5th (fifth) Philippine Tour in Mindanao, Mindoro, Cavite and in the Visayas.
