UP volleyball star Bersola nears full recovery
Around 80% (recovered) na siguro --- Kathy Bersola

University of the Philippines middle blocker Kathy Bersola is near full recovery after suffering a left anterior cruciate ligament injury early this year during the UAAP Season 77 volleyball tournament.

"Around 80% (recovered) na siguro," said Bersola on Sunday after the Lady Maroons’ four-set loss to Ateneo De Manila in the quarterfinals of Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference.

Bersola, who won the UAAP Best Blocker award two seasons ago, was in street clothes and has not seen action for the past seven months since going down with an injury in the middle of the Season 77.

The UP veteran said that right now she’s doing some light workout to slowly get her condition back.

"I can run na. I can jump and I’ve been doing a lot of volleyball drills but kulang pa," according to Bersola. "Pero naka-set ako na mag-take ng clearance test in less than a month from now."

Bersola is expected to join the Lady Maroons’ full training and preparation for UAAP by the middle of September.

She told reporters that there’s still some slight pain on her knee but is optimistic that she’ll be hitting the court soon.

"Ngayon sa end range sa dulo na lang siya nagkaka-pain. Medyo hidi pa siya easy to move sa dulo pero better than before," described Bersola. "Kapag nag-try ako na i-full range siya na abot sa dulo may napi-feel pa rin ako sa dulo na parang masakit not like sa right (knee) na kaya ko siyang isipa-sipa. (Kapag bine-bend ko ang tuhod ko) masakit pa sa dulo."

Bersola is happy to see her team is doing fine even without her and another veteran hitter Nicole Tiamzon. The Lady Maroons got a slew of blue chip recruits in Maria Lina Molde, Diana Carlos, Justine Dorog, and Maristella Layug while sophomores Jewel Lai and Marian Buitre showed vast improvement.

"Hindi ako nadi-disappoint sa performance nila ngayon kasi kahit na sabihin nating first out of high school sila pero nakikipag-toe-to-toe na sila with all the other teams na puro veterans na ang nasa loob," said Bersola. "Kami nina Nicole (Tiamzon) pagpasok namin madali naman siguro kaming makaka-adjust since lagi naman namin silang kasama, lagi namin silang pinupuntahan sa trainining. Si Nicole nagte-training na. Yung transition siguro kapag nag-mix na kami madali lang."

For now, Bersola is focused on her full recovery but admitted that she misses playing for UP and her teammates.

"Sobra (miss ko na ang paglalaro). No doubt, sobra," she said.

The UAAP volleyball season will unfurl on February 2016 from the usual November opening following the new school year calendar.
