IS IT OVER? Sen. Pia Cayetano was not happy with the UAAP decision that Hubert Cani still needs to finish his two-year residency before being allowed to play.
Sen. Pia Cayetano lashed out at the UAAP decision saying Hubert Cani is still ineligible for the upcoming season.
Cani is a former Nazareth School of National University who transferred to Ateneo de Manila University. As per current UAAP rules, student-athletes need to serve a two-year residency before being allowed to play.
Cayetano’s newly-passed Student-Athletes Protection Bill disallows athletic organizations from imposing any residency rules on transferees. However, the UAAP argued that the law does not work retroactively and as such, does not cover Cani’s case.
Reacting to the league decision, the senator said in her statement, “The UAAP board has once more displayed its arrogance and immaturity by invoking its unjust two-year residency rule.”
The former student-athlete then urged the UAAP to respect the student-athlete’s right to play for the school of his choice. She continued, “The UAAP is not a commercial, but an amateur league. The UAAP should stop treating its student-athletes like commodities.”
For their part, Blue Eagles coach Bo Perasol said the school is set to release a statement within the week.
