There’s not pressure or competition between the two of us. So it’s a very special thing to be playing together again.” --- Matt Nieto
If it were possible to have your mind set on a college from the day you were born, that would probably be the case for the Nieto brothers. Going to Ateneo was an obvious choice for Matt and Mike, having been raised by a Blue Eagle father and having been schooled in Katipunan all their lives.
“Some other schools wanted to talk to us, but we already set our mind to Ateneo. We don’t want the environment to change and we’ve always dreamt of playing for the blue and white,” said the twin brothers.
The Nietos led the Ateneo Blue Eaglets to a juniors championship back in UAAP Season 77. Both of them capped off their high school basketball careers with a hard-earned crown and exited as heroes hailed for an amazing run. Now entering the seniors division, however, Matt and Mike understand that it’s going to be a different story.
“Pero wala naman kaming hinihinging playing time. I’m just here to help with whatever Coach Bo needs me for right now. Kung hindi ako ipasok, I’ll still cheer from the bench. Gusto ko lang manalo – not for myself but for my team, Coach Bo, Kiefer, Fonzo and Gwyne,” said Mike.
Matt shares the same sentiments saying that his mindset is to support the Blue Eagles in the best way that he can. “Kung ano man ituro sa akin ni Coach, gagawin ko para manalo yung team.”
The twins don’t ask for much because according to them, being lined up and getting to play alongside their college idols are already great blessings in themselves. “Being with sina Kief palang, masarap na feeling na kasi marami kaming natututunan. Lahat ng sinasabi niya inside and outside the court na makakatulong, we try to apply it.”
More than that, nothing beats sharing the court and achieving their basketball dreams together.
“Ever since nung mga bata pa kami, magkatabi kami matulog sa isang kama. Until now ganun pa rin. Kung nasaan siya, nandoon din ako. We’re really close, as in super. There’s not pressure or competition between the two of us. So it’s a very special thing to be playing together again.”
