Meet some of the most exciting newcomers for UAAP Season 78.
New season means new faces.
As UAAP 78 basketball kicks off Saturday, here are the newcomers you should watch out for.
Jerie Pingoy - Ateneo Blue Eagles
He sparked a rule change in the UAAP.
Frankly, that is all you need to know about Jerie Pingoy, if that does not make you look out for the former FEU Baby Tamaraw, nothing will.
After serving two years of residency due to his controversial transfer, the former two-time UAAP juniors MVP will finally get to show just what he is made of in the senior ranks.
JD Tungcab - Adamson Falcons
Adamson may stil be a couple of years away from being contenders again but JD Tungcab is enough reason to watch the Falcons this season.
The young wing is both talented and confident and it will be interesting just how much damage can he do for Adamson as they try to improve from the disaster that was Season 77.
Hubert Cani - Ateneo Blue Eagles
This kid almost went the Jerie Pingoy route on his way to Ateneo so yeah, he is good.
However, thanks to a new law passed by Senator Pia Cayetano, the former National University standout will get to man the point for the Blue Eagles in Season 78.
The former RP youth team member and UAAP junior's finals MVP should be a nice piece in Ateneo's youth movement.
Mario Bonleon - UST Growling Tigers
The forgotten player who also suffered from the two-year residency rule, Mario Bonleon will finally make his official debut for the Growling Tigers in Season 78.
A former national youth team member, "Embons" lit up the score boards for UST during the preseason with the absence of key veterans, so how he will mesh with the complete team will be worth the look, especially since he's been raring to go for years now.
Zachary Huang - UST Growling Tigers
Unable to snag talented city recruits, the UST Growling Tigers searched the provinces to find a gem and in Cebu, they found Zachary Huang.
Lanky and talented, the CESAFI champion fits the mold UST is known for as the Tigers scramble to find a replacement for Aljon Mariano and the next piece moving forward with Kevin Ferrer set to play his final year.
Andrei Caracut - De La Salle Green Archers
De La Salle lost Almond Vosotros, a small but heady streak shooter due to graduation. Enter Andrei Caracut, a small but heady streak shooter to fill in the gaps.
La Salle's prized recruit from San Beda was last seen torching defenses in the preseason tournaments, now he's ready for primetime as he looks to stretch the floor for guys like Jeron Teng and Jason Perkins for the Green Archers.
Mike and Matt Nieto - Ateneo Blue Eagles
The Nieto twins terrorized the UAAP juniors division last year, now they look to make an impact for the Blue Eagles in the senior ranks.
Mike, the Season 77 juniors MVP, is the one that could do damage as early as this season but don't count out Matt to languish on the bench.
Both cagers are exceptional talent that could pave the way for a new era of Ateneo basketball.
