Darkhorse UST begins campaign versus upset-conscious Adamson
MOVING ON. UST is hoping their veteran-laden crew actually gets to play together while Adamson is banking on their rookie-laden team to quickly mature.

After back-to-back Finals appearances, University of Sto. Tomas fell out of the playoff picture in the previous season.

A Growling Tiger squad that vows to have learned from all their missteps commence their quest to return to the Final Four in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament against the Adamson University Soaring Falcons on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The battle between UST and Adamson will be broadcast LIVE at 4:00 PM on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 and will also be streamed LIVE on sports.abs-cbn.com.

UST comes into the season essentially intact with last year’s rotation players Karim Abdul, Kevin Ferrer, Louie Vigil, Ed Daquioag, and Jam Sheriff all returning. However, the Espana-based school is hoping that their veterans actually get to play together after suffering through a snake-bitten campaign a year ago.

Opting to see the bright side in their losing season, coach Bong Dela Cruz is expecting a much wiser Growling Tiger side this time around in saying, “The veterans want to prove that they have already learned.” Aljon Mariano is the only key player they lost and Dela Cruz has enough trust that Kent Lao and Mario Bonleon are more than capable of holding down the fort.

Acting as a complete opposite, Adamson will trot out a rookie-laden squad which will have a third-year man as its team captain in Dawn Ochea. Most notable among these young guns is former King Baby Falcon Jaydee Tungcab who will go all out to bring his slashing game into the Seniors.

With a very young team that also features sophomore Ivan Villanueva, first-time head coach Mike Fermin would like to keep expectations at the minimum. “We will just try to improve from last year. Kahit papaano, we’ll try to be as competitive as possible,” he said.
