"I have to prove myself." - UST head coach Bong dela Cruz as the Growling Tigers begin UAAP Season 78.
Bong dela Cruz heard the talk and he felt the anger too.
As the rookie head coach of the UST Growling Tigers in Season 77 coming off back-to-back UAAP Finals appearances, he heard all the harsh words from critics, most of them calling for him to resign, and felt the pressure to deliver.
"Yeah I know, syempre nung hinandle ko 'yung team na ito may pressure na eh. Tapos nung na-down pa last year, tumaas pa [pressure]." dela Cruz told ABS-CBN Sports.
After a disastrous Season 77, the embattled coach knows he's on the hot seat with one final chance to make an impression to a title-hungry fanbase.
And pretty much like his team, he wants to make it count this year.
"Given the second chance, syempre I have to prove myself. I'm here to help the team," he said.
With modest expectations compared to his first go-round and judging by the positive mood coming from the entire team in general, it looks like he can finally silence the critics, for now at least.
The Growling Tigers open their season tomorrow as dela Cruz gets his first crack to leading UST to victory against the Adamson Falcons at 4:00 PM at the Araneta Coliseum. The game will be broadcast LIVE on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 and will also be streamed LIVE on sports.abs-cbn.com.
